Lake's Blasiole named Federal League Player of the Year

A record-setting career for Matt Blasiole culminated in the Lake High School senior being selected the 2013 Federal League Football Player of the Year by the league coaches.

Blasiole leads the way on the 26-player all-league first team, which also is selected by the coaches. The number of players each school receives is based on the school’s finish in the league standings. Players are selected regardless of position.

McKinley’s Todd Filtz was selected the coach of the year after guiding the Bulldogs to their second straight outright Federal League title in his two years at the school. McKinley was the only school in the league to make the state playoffs this season.

Blasiole, who became Lake’s all-time career rushing leader this season, helped the Blue Streaks go 6-4 this fall in Dan DeGeorge’s first year as the head coach.

Blasiole rushed for 1,175 yards and 15 touchdowns on 224 carries. He gained 1,421 all-purpose yards and scored 17 TDs in all.

Defensively, he also was in on 35 tackles, including seven for loss and four sacks.

A year ago, Blasiole led Stark County with 1,656 yards rushing and tied a school record when he scored six TDs against Boardman in Week 10.

For his career, Blasiole rushed for 3,456 yards and 38 touchdowns, scoring 43 TDs overall.
